Perennial with tuberous roots, upright, sometimes scandent, branching stems and rounded deeply lobed leaves. Panicles of deep violet, hooded flowers in summer.

Best in cool, moist and fertile soil but generally fairly tolerant. Full sun or part shade. Very hardy.

By division in autumn or late winter, can be slow to re-establish.
