Stout stems grow from rather tuberous roots, producing spikes of hooded, pure white flowers in late summer.

Best in cool, moist and fertile soil but generally fairly tolerant. Full sun or part shade. Cut back after flowering to encourage new stems.

By division in autumn or late winter, can be slow to re-establish.
