Hardy annual. Dark maroon red buds open to orange double flowerheads with darker burgundy red edges and petal tips. Hairy, aromatic leaves. Long flowering season.
Any well drained soil, even poor ones, in full sun or part shade. Dead-head to prolong flowering.
From seed sown in spring or autumn, usually in-situ.
Easy to grow, long flowering garden annual. Excellent for cut flowers.
Young leaves are edible in salads and petals may be used to make a tea. Flowers are also used as a dye and food colouring. Long history as a medicinal herb.
Attractive to insects.
Very good companion plant, for example with potatoes.
