description:
Small deciduous tree with a wide-spreading rounded habit. Light grey-brown bark. Excellent foliage of heavily veined, toothed leaves that are longer and darker green than the European hornbeam. Light green hop-like flower catkins in spring, maturing to form seeds in autumn.

cultivation:
Most well drained soils in sun or part shade. Once established, will tolerate periods of drought.

Responds well to trimming.

propagation:
By seed or cuttings

usage:
Very good ornamental tree. May be used for hedging and can be pleached in the same manner as European hornbeam.
