Large spreading shrub or small tree. Broadly oval or obovate leaves, smaller than H. mollis, turning yellow in autumn. Clusters of slightly scented spidery flowers with thin yellow petals suffused with red from the bases, in late winter. Good autumn foliage colours.
Best in moist, fertile, acid to neutral soil in sun or part shade. Dislikes dry soils. Benefits from a site sheltered from strong winds.
Prune if required, by removing dead or unwanted branches in late winter/early spring.
Relatively rare in cultivation.
