Fast growing annual climber. Winged stems and ovate-elliptic leaves in pairs. Produces two smallish, bicolour flowers per stem, deep purple-maroon, paler at the base and with lavender-blue to violet keels. Very strong, sweet fragrance.

Fertile, humus-rich, well drained soil in full sun or light dappled shade. Provide suitable support. Dead-head regularly to prolong flowering.

From seed sown in early to mid spring or in autumn in mild areas. It helps to soak or chip the seeds first. Can suffer from powdery mildew.

Cut flowers, fences and trellis.

other notes:
This is the original cultivated sweet pea. First discovered in Sicily in1695, by a monk, Francesco Cupani the author of Syllabus plantarum Siciliae, found growing wild near his monestary. He sent seeds to Robert Uvedale, in England, in 1699. It was being sold commercially by 1724.
