description:
Small deciduous tree or large shrub, forming a broad, rounded crown. Usually has a short main trunk that divides into many main branches. Tends to be smaller in cultivation than in the wild, where it can reach 18m. Attractive pinnate leaves with up to 11 olive-green leaflets. Silvery new growth in spring. Erect spikes of fragrant, dull creamy white flowers in summer, followed by flat seed pods. Coppery brown bark, peeling on mature trees.

cultivation:
Any reasonable well drained, moist to dryish soil in a sunny position. Very cold hardy. Dislikes waterlogged conditions.
Notably resistant to honey fungus.

propagation:
From seed. Also from root cuttings taken in early winter.

usage:
Adaptable and valuable landscape tree, but surprising under-used. Good for cold locations and makes a good street tree.

Produces a very hard, strong and heavy timber.

As a Leguminous plant, fixes nitrogen in the soil.
