description:
Broad spreading deciduous tree. Narrowly obovate, sometimes puckered, aromatic, mid-green leaves. Abundantly produced, slightly fragrant, white flowers in spring, about 10cm across, opening from down covered buds. Pink fruits which split to release bright red seeds. Pale grey-brown bark.
cultivation:
Prefers moist, humus-rich, neutral to acid soil, but is adaptable to most reasonably fertile soil types, including chalky ones. Best in a sheltered position in sun or part shade. Very hardy.
If required, prune unwanted or crossing branches when dormant in autumn or late winter to very early spring.
