Small spreading tree. Very attractive pale pink flowers flushed with purple from the base. They have 16 tepals clustered in twos and threes. Will produce flowers on comparatively young plants.
SImilar to its parent Magnolia x loebneri 'Leonard Messel', differing slightly in the flower form.
Not too fussy about soil, moist, reasonably fertile, humus-rich, acid to neutral soil is ideal. Will thrive in heavy clay and tolerant of atmospheric pollution. Best with some protection from strong winds, in sun or part shade. Flower buds may suffer damage from hard frosts.
If required, prune unwanted or crossing branches when dormant in autumn or late winter to very early spring.
A seedling of Magnolia x loebneri 'Leonard Messel'. Raised at the Chollipo Arboretum, South Korea, 1987.
