Selected clone with larger leaves, flowers and fruits. Less thorny than the species. Makes an attractive small tree with a low spreading crown of dark green leaves. White or pink-tinged flowers, later followed by russet-brown fruits.
Sometimes has good autumn foliage colour.
Moderately fertile, well drained soil, preferably in full sun or light shade. Thrives best in mild temperate climates that have warm summers.
By grafting, often onto a quince rootstock
Edible fruits, but need to be left to become over-ripe and half-rotten first (known as Bletting). Often used to make conserves.
