Fleshy rhizomatous perennial with branching stems of ovate, shallowly toothed, grey-green leaves. Dense, rounded, terminal cymes of small star-shaped flowers in late spring and early summer. The flowers are yellow but appear dusky red or red-purple from the conspicuous male anthers. Female flowers have purple tipped carpels.
