Small tree with a strong upright habit. Rounded, deeply cut lobed and toothed leaves which turn crimson scarlet in autumn. Freely produced small red-purple flowers in drooping clusters.
Moist, well drained, fertile soil in sun or part shade. Needs a position sheltered from cold winds and late frosts, which can damage emerging foliage. Prune if required, by removing dead or unwanted branches in late autumn to midwinter.
By grafting in late winter, or bud-grafts in late summer.
Known as 'Maiku jaku' in Japan (means"Dancing Peacock")
