Large seven-lobed, palmate soft green leaves, later producing reliable bright scarlet autumn colours. Robust grower which tolerates sun and heat well. Eventually makes a small spreading tree with a broad, rounded canopy.
Moist, well drained, fertile soil in sun or part shade. Grows best and gives the most spectacular autumn colour on neutral to acid soil. Needs a position sheltered from cold winds and late frosts, which can damage emerging foliage. Prune if required, by removing dead or unwanted branches in late autumn to midwinter.
By grafting. Sometimes available as seed, it is uncertain if they reliably come true.
Well known old Japanese cultivar.
