Dark green, deeply cut and divided leaves. Deep blue flowers in late summer. Selected forms are more often seen than the species.

Best in cool, moist and fertile soil but generally fairly tolerant. Full sun or part shade. Cut back after flowering to encourage new stems.

From seed or by division in autumn or late winter, can be slow to re-establish.
