Broadly conical shrub or small tree. Opposite, deep green, palmate, typical horse chestnut type leaves. Erect panicles of white or pale pink flowers in early summer. followed in autumn by pear-shaped, smooth-skinned fruits containing 1 or 2 large orange-brown seeds.
Unfussy and thrives in most reasonable soils but best in moist, well drained, deep, fertile soil, in full sun or part shade.
