Low growing creeping plant, spreading by stolons, with rosettes of rounded, spoon-shaped dark green leaves. Square sectioned, slightly hairy stems. Spikes of small blue flowers in late spring and early summer.
Moist soil in partial shade. Will tolerate poor soils and full shade but not very dry conditions. Can be invasive, but only if conditions are very favourable.
Traditionally used medicinally to help stop bleeding and for coughs and ulcers, but rarely used now.
Wildflower of Europe and Western Asia. The parent of several selected forms.
