description:
Bulbous perennial which develops more or less evergreen, long, cylindrical, hollow, green or blue-green leaves. The bulb, formed just underground is fairly small. Rounded heads of numerous, small greenish-white flowers, at first covered by a papery membrane, in late summer. Strongly aromatic.

Fertile, well drained soil.

propagation:
From seed sown in spring or late summer or bulb offsets from established clumps.

usage:
Edible, with a strong flavour. The stems can be used like chives. Useful winter vegetable, although it will not store for long periods like the commonly cultivated onion.
Also used as medicinally.

Originally probably native to China and North-east Asia, but has long been cultivated in Asia and Europe.
