Wild flower native to many damp, woodland areas of Britain and increases rapidly in favourable conditions. Usually regarded as too invasive for most gardens. White flowers produced in early summer and the massed effect under a woodland canopy can rival the earlier show of the bluebells. All parts of the plant smell strongly of garlic.
Prefers damp, rich, limy soil and some shade but is general easy to grow and vigorous.
Self seeds easily.
Young leaves, flowers and bulbs are edible and also have medicinal value.
