Tender deciduous shrub with narrow, strongly lemon-scented, bright green leaves arranged in whorls of 3 on upright stems. Delicate clusters of pale lilac to white flowers in late summer.
Protect from hard frosts, although established plants will survive short periods a few degrees below zero. Best in well-drained, poorish, light soils and full sun.
Does not attain full size in cool climates.
Remove any dead branches in spring.
From seed or by cuttings.
Culinary herb, the leaves and side shoots can be dried and powdered for use in stuffings and cakes. Strong lemon aroma and taste.
Also a medicinal herb, used to treat asthma, colds, fevers, stomach upsets and diarrhoea.
Native to Chile and Peru.
