Tuberous perennial with purple-spotted stems of narrowly lance-shaped leaves. Heads of narrowly funnel-shaped dark pinkish red flowers tipped with green and with dark markings inside the throats. Late summer flowering. Similar to A. psittacina but shorter growing and with larger flowers.

Needs free-draining, rich soil in a well sheltered, protected position, in sun or part shade. May take a while to become established and best left undisturbed.

By seed or division of established clumps in autumn or early spring.
