Tuberous perennial with purple-spotted stems of narrowly lance-shaped leaves and in summer showy heads of green-flushed, deep red flowers, with bold dark markings on the inside.
Needs free-draining, rich soil in a well sheltered, protected position, in sun or part shade. May take a while to become established and best left undisturbed. Some form of support may be required. Dead-heading is beneficial.
By seed or division of established clumps in autumn or early spring.
Can cause skin irritation for some people.
