Tall half-hardy annual which is well known for its long, pendulous clusters of tiny red flowers. Lightish green oval to lance-shaped leaves. The small edible seeds can be white, yellow or black depending on the cultivar. There are many named cultivars
Needs sun and fertile well-drained soil to grow well. Will tolerate periods of drought once well grown. Performs best in areas with long warm summers. Not frost hardy.
Popular garden ornamental, useful for large annual bedding schemes. Also grown as an edible food crop in some regions.
Originated in South America, as a cultivated plant grown food in the Andes valleys.
