Tall, branching annual with large oblong, dark purplish-green leaves. Erect, plume-like spike of tiny crimson flowers from summer to early autumn. The small seeds can be white, cream, golden-yellow or black depending on the cultivar. There are many named cultivars.
Needs sun and fertile well-drained soil to grow well.
Young leaves and seeds are edible and the plant is also used as a medicinal herb.
