Half-hardy annual, producing large, thick, upright spikes of dark purplish red flowers, quite unlike the normal drooping tassels of "Love Lies Bleeding".

other notes:
There is some taxonomic confusion and this variery is normally sold as Amaranthus caudatus 'Fat Spike'. However the erect flower spikes indicate that it is more likely a hypochondriacus cultivar and it i scurrently treated as such by the RHS. It could also possibly be a hybrid.
