Large, funnel-shaped, deep pink flowers with paler centres, produced in autumn on bare purplish stems before the strap shaped, fleshy leaves are produced..
Well drained fertile soil in full sun, with protection from hard frosts. Alternatively grow in a cool greenhouse in a free-draining, loam-based compost. Plant bulbs in late summer, just below the soil surface.
From seed or offsets, removed in spring.
This is the true Amaryllis, whereas bulbs commonly sold under this name actually belong to the Hippeastrum genus.
