Small tree or sometimes a large bushy shrub. Racemes of white flowers that are much larger than the species. Later followed by blue-black fruits. Ovate leaves are pinky-bronze when young, maturing to mid-green. Good orange and red autumn foliage colours.
Fairly tolerant of most soil conditions but develops best autumn colour when grown on neutral to acid soil. Thrives in moist or even wet conditions. Sun or part shade.
Greenwood or semi-ripe cuttings in summer.
Often confused with A. arborea, A. canadensis and A. lamarckii.
