Small wildflower or common garden weed, annual or sometimes biennial. Ribbed, heart-shaped, mid-green leaves in pairs on long sprawling stems. Small, 5-petalled, bright scarlet-red flowers that only open on sunny days. The flower usually close up about mid afternoon and also in humid or damp weather. Other flower colours occur occasionally, lilac, maroon or blue. The flowers develop into small round seed capsules
Moderately fertile, moist, well drained soil in full sun.
Native and common to Britain and Europe, also widely distributed in other temperate parts of the world
Usually found as a weed on cultivated ground and wasteland, also on damp, sandy places near the sea.
