Erect stems of alternate, lance-shaped, mid-green leaves. Clusters of bright orange flowers in mid and late summer, followed by attractive tapering seed pods that split to release the fluffy seeds.
Well drained soil in full sun or part shade. Does well on sandy and gravelly soils. Drought tolerant once established.
From seed or by basal cuttings in spring.
Extensively used as a medicinal herb, originally by the Native North Americans.
Young shoots anf flowers are edible.
Poisonous if eaten in very large quantities, may cause diarrhoea and vomiting.
