Spreading clumps of pinnately divided leaves on thin stems. Erect spikes of lilac pink flowers in mid and late summer.
There are a number of cultivated forms.
Best in moist, fertile soil in partial shade. Will grow in full sun if the soil does not dry out. Tolerant of dryer conditions than most other Astilbes.
