Upright growing, Bright green foliage, divided into oval leaflets, bluish-grey when young. Attractive spikes of violet-blue pea-like flowers in summer, later forming decorative dark-grey seed pods.

Well drained, light soil in full sun or part shade. Dislikes disturbance and may take some time to become established and flower well.

The leaves and roots are used medicinally.
