Deciduous, bushy shrub with spiny stems and golden yellow leaves thinly margined and sometimes flushed with red, particularly on the new growth in spring. Racemes of small, red- tinged, pale yellow flowers in mid spring, followed by red berries in autumn.
Most well drained soils in sun or part shade. Best in a sheltered position.

The name 'Diabolicum' is in general use by the trade, but may be invalid and should probably be replaced by 'Diabolic'.
