description:
Large, hairy, broadly ovate leaves, generally evergreen in mild areas but in frost-probe areas tends to die back in winter. In early spring, before the leaves start growing, short stems emerge bearing tight clusters of pink or white flowers with rose-pink calyces.

cultivation:
Humus-rich, moist, well drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Needs a sheltered position with protection from very hard frosts. Can be successfully grown in a cool greenhouse.

propagation:
From sections of root rhizome, each with at least one leaf node or growing bud, preferably taken after flowering in late spring or in autumn. Plant in well drained soil or compost.
