The graceful native, 'Lady of the Woods'. Upright growing, the smaller branches becoming pendulous with age. Small leaves turning yellow in autumn. Brown-yellow catkins in spring. White peeling bark which with age becomes ruggedly fissured and dark-grey, almost black, at the base.
Will grow in most soils, in sun or part shade. Extremely hardy.
Good street and landscaping tree which looks good in many situations, including urban environments.
Long history of medicinal use, with extract made from various parts, including bark, sap and leaves.
