Annual or sometime biennial with branching stems, hairy green, aromatic leaves and large yellow or orange flowerheads in summer.
Any well drained soil, even poor ones, in full sun or part shade. Dead-head to prolong flowering.
From seed sown in spring or autumn, usually in-situ.
Easy to grow, long flowering garden annual.
Young leaves are edible in salads and petals may be used to make a tea. Flowers are also used as a dye and food colouring. Long history as a medicinal herb, taken both orally and used externally to treat a wide range of problems.
Attractive to insects.
Very good companion plant, for example with potatoes.
