Arching branches of stiff, lance-shaped, dark green leaves. Young shoots are pinkish red. Dark red, bottlebrush flower spikes in summer, fading to purplish-red. The flower filaments are tipped with yellow.
Well drained, preferably neutral to acid soil in full sun. Dislikes shallow chalky soils. Warm, sheltered position and may need winter protection in cold areas.
Prune after flowering, cutting back to healthy sideshoots. Extensive pruning should be spread over several years.
Can be successfully trained as a wall shrub.
From semi-ripe cuttings in summer.
