Large evergreen shrub or small tree. Sharply pointed, narrow dark green leaves, 80 to 100 mm long. Bottlebrush shaped spikes of rich red flowers in late spring and summer.
Any well drained soil in full sun or light shade. Quite tolerant of chalky soils and salt. Best in a warm, sheltered position and may need winter protection in cold areas.
Prune after flowering, cutting back to healthy sideshoots. Extensive pruning should be spread over several years.
Can be successfully trained as a wall shrub.
From seed or semi-ripe cuttings in summer.
Good wall shrub or large evergreen for Mediterranean or sub-troprical gardens.
Native to New South Wales, found in open forest and scrubland.
