Subshrubby perennial, often grown in temperate areas as an annual or house plant. Opposite glossy green leaves on stiffish stems. Single 5-petalled flowers in shades of pink, purple, red, salmon and white.
Best in poorish well-drained soils, in full sun or part shade. Needs reasonably warm conditions during the growing season. Not winter hardy in cool regions, but quite robust and tolerant of heat and drought once established. Usually treated as an annual.
