description:
Clumps of stiff erect stems, which are more rounded than other species, of toothed and boldly veined mid to dark green leaves and in late summer, heads of curiously-shaped deep purplish-pink flowers, each appearing to have a gaping mouth reminiscent of its common name, with small yellow beards.

cultivation:
Deep, fertile, moist or even very wet soil. Will thrive in heavy clay. Partial shade or sun.

propagation:
By division in spring. Also from seed or soft tip cuttings.

usage:
Can be grown in a bog garden or a border that does not get too dry. Useful for late summer colour.
