Slender, erect and arching canes that are distinctively swollen at each node. Good foliage with masses of fine, narrow leaves. Vigorous grower once established, spreading by runners to form large groves.
Moist, well drained, fertile soil. Sun or part shade, but usually looks best with a little shade. Hardy.
Running habit so needs planty of space, but fairly easily controlled. May become invasive in some situations.
Good architectural plant.
The knobbly canes are popular for making walking sticks in China.
Young shoots are edible.
