Small short-lived perennial or annual with thick fleshy stalks and evergreen, glossy foliage. Abundant pearly pink, starry flowers from April to July and sometime continuing through summer to early September.
There is also a white form.
Best in moist, peaty soil and shade, but will tolerate sun. Thrives particularly well on sandy acid soils. Tolerant and easy to grow.
From seed, will often self seed freely.
Woodland gardens, cottage gardens and underplanting shrubs.
The leaves, stems, and flowers are all edible and may be added to salads as a substitute for lettuce or spinach. It is rich in vitamins A and C.
Extensively distributed across northern parts of Asia and America, naturalised elsewhere.
