Suckering shrub with erect stems and large heart-shaped dark green leaves which are often tinged red-purple. Heads of scented, small purple-pink flowers in late summer and autumn.
Moist, well-drained, fertile humus-rich soil in sun or part shade. Best in a mild, sheltered location. The top growth can be damaged by hard frosts, but will usually re-shoot from the base.
Root runners can produce suckers at some distance from the original plant.
By seed or division of rooted suckers.
