Striking evergreen perennial with thick fleshy bulbous roots and large broadly strap-shaped leaves of dark green striped with cream . Clusters of bright orange flowers in late winter or early spring, which may be followed by large green berries that slowly ripen to red.
Well drained, humus-rich soil in part shade. Will tolerate periods of drought and full shade. Tender and needs warm conditions.
Grows well in containers and flowers best if slightly pot-bound. Water and feed potted plants during the growing season but water sparingly in autumn and winter.
From seed or by division.
Only a proportion of seed grown plants will come true, others will produce all green leaved plants. However it is possible that second generation seed from these plants may still produce variagated seedlings.
House or conservatory plant.
All parts are poisonous, although quite large quantities would need to be ingested.
