A form of the corkscrew hazel with the same twisted branches and twigs, but dusky purple-red foliage. The drooping catkins and later on the nut cases are also reddish purple tinted.
Any reasonably fertile, moist soil in sun or part shade. Best foliage colour in sun.
Normally found as grafted plants, cut out any straight stems growing up from the rootstock.
Only from cuttings or by grafting.
Cross between Corylus avellana 'Contorta and the purple hazel, introduced by Notcutt's Nurseries.
