Evergreen conifer from China and Japan. Ultimately quite large growing, forming a conical or broadly columnar tree. The mid to dark green foliage is arranged in spirals around the shoots. Male and female strobili are green, the males turning yellow in spring when the pollen is shed. Produces small rounded cones. Fibrous, flaking, reddish brown bark. There are several named varieties.

Best in rich deep soils but tolerant of most well drained soil including chalky ones.
Usually for a conifer, old untidy specimens can usually be restored by coppicing, cutting back to about 60 to 90 cms from the ground in spring.

From seed or cuttings.
