Unusual, medium sized, conical tree of rather exotic appearance. The stiff, sharply pointed, narrowly lance-shaped leaves, up to 7cm long, are spirally arranged on the shoots but are twisted to form two ranks. They are glossy bright green with two white bands underneath. Small ovoid female cones. Thick, fibrous reddish-brown bark.

Best in moist conditions, otherwise old foliage tends to turn brown and persist on the branches. Full sun or dappled shade, in a sheltered position with protection from cold, drying winds. Sometimes does not form a clear leading, developing a multistemed, rounded top tree. Tolerates coppicing. Reaches about 4 metres in 10 years.

From seed or hardwood cuttings in summer.

Specimen tree.
