Small bushy tender subshrub, grown as an annual in cool regions. Hairy lance-shaped green leaves. Tubular red and purple flowers with two large petals looking like ears, produced over a long period from late spring to autumn.

Well drained soil in full sun or part shade. Quite tender although reputed to survive temperatures just below freezing if grown on very well drained soil.

From seed, by division or from softwood cuttings in spring.

Summer bedding or containers and shrub borders in warm climates. Can be grown as a conservatory or house plant.
