Huge silvery grey, deeply cut leaves and large blue-purple thistle flowers in summer. Dislikes cold damp conditions.
Needs well drained soil and full sun, with shelter from strong winds. In cold areas the rootstock should be protected by a dry winter mulch.
If grown for foliage effect alone, the flowering stems can be removed as they emerge.
From seed, by division in spring or from root cuttings in winter.
Traditionally cultivated for the edible young leaves. Also an imposing architectural plant for large borders.
