description:
Huge silvery grey, deeply cut leaves and large blue-purple thistle flowers in summer. Dislikes cold damp conditions.

cultivation:
Needs well drained soil and full sun, with shelter from strong winds. In cold areas the rootstock should be protected by a dry winter mulch.
If grown for foliage effect alone, the flowering stems can be removed as they emerge.

propagation:
From seed, by division in spring or from root cuttings in winter.

usage:
Traditionally cultivated for the edible young leaves. Also an imposing architectural plant for large borders.
