Perennial sedge producing edible tubers with a slightly sweet, nutty flavour. Triangular sectioned stems and slender grass-like leaves. Yellowish-brown flowering spikelets.
Spreads strongly and can become very invasive.
Damp or moist soil in full sun or part shade. Will grow in shallow water.
From seed or by division.
Cultivated in Spain and elsewhere to produce edible Tiger nuts.
Probably originally native to Asia but now widely naturalised, particularly in sub-tropical and tropical areas.
Was grown for food in Ancient Egypt.
Regarded as a problematic weed in sonme areas and very difficult to erradicate.
