Usually semi-evergreen but may be deciduous or evergreen. Narrowly elliptic or lance-shaped, leathery, dark green leaves. Clusters of strongly fragrant, white or pale pink-flushed flowers, deep mauve-pink in bud, in late winter. Fleshy, round, purple-black fruits later.

Reasonably fertile, humus rich, moist soil, which is neither very acid nor alkaline, in full sun or part shade. Dislikes dry soil. Resents root disturbance once established. Best in a sheltered position.
