A magnificent tree-like fern, it slowly forms a stout fibrous "stem" which is crowned by a huge rosette of big, beautifully dissected fronds.
The growing point is at the top and the roots grown down through the old fibrous trunk.
Needs moist conditions throughout the year. Best in some shade. Dislikes exposure and dry soils. Good in areas with high rainfall. May need protection from hard frost in cold climates. Slow growing in temperate areas.
The top of the trunk can be cut off and replanted, but the remaining base part will not re-grow.
From spores or by rhizome offsets when available.
Native to parts of Australia, predominantly the western and southern ccoastal areas - Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania.
